Plantation
Plantation refers to the renewal of forest crop by artificial means. We are based on plantation forest. We do plantation of mainly fast-growing species like Eucalyptus, Teak, Sissoo etc. to produce timber, fuelwood, leaf-litter etc.
Our main objective of the plantation is to:
- To change the crop composition and to introduce fast growing and exotic species.
- To increase the production to fulfill the local and national market demand.
Site preparation:
Site preparation is done to remove or reduce the vegetative competition, unwanted trees, and mainly to prepare the land to promote the growth and survival of planting stocks. Here, we do mechanical site preparation to remove the unnecessary vegetation to promote the soil for better growth and survival with the help of machineries. Tractors, with certain implements attached to them, are used to clear the plantation plot. Ploughing is also done by tractors before plantation. This activity is done two times before plantation for better result.
What tree species to establish?
The choice of species is a most important as well as difficult decision to make. We decide planting species based on the future market want and species suitable for the sites. We usually plant fast growing species like Eucalpyptus, Teak, Sissoo etc.
When to plant?
As we have our own nursery, we produce containerized seedlings for plantation. The seedlings are grown in polybags and have roots covered in soils. They are not as delicate as bare rooted seedlings, so timing of plantation is not quite important. However, we usually plant after the arrival of monsoon showers as the rain comes with a wealth of life-giving plant nutrients.
How to plant?
Plantations are always done in some pattern. Here we use square spacing pattern where distance between rows are same as along the rows. The appropriate spacing used here is 2.5m*2.5m. We can plant 1600 seedlings per hectare by using this pattern.
How to protect the seedlings?
Protection work is one of the important and difficult work to do. Some steps we taken to protect the seedlings are;
- Fencing around the plantation plots.
- Each 100 ha. Plots for each forest guard.
- Regular patrolling at days as well as nights.
